We sit in USDA zone 7b–8a with long stretches of 90-degree humidity, better than fifty inches of rain a year, punishing summer UV, a spring pollen season that coats everything, and just enough hard freezes to split anything holding water. Furniture that performs beautifully in Arizona or coastal California can look tired here in two seasons.
That is the filter we buy through. We are not trying to carry everything — we are trying to carry what still looks good on your patio in year five. Below are the materials that consistently earn their keep in the Mid-South, and the ones we steer people away from.
The workhorse here. It will not rust, it is light enough to move, and the finish holds color through our summers. Wrought iron looks the part but rusts at every chip in our humidity.
Naturally oily and rot-resistant. Left alone it weathers to a soft silver-grey; oiled once a year it keeps its honey tone. Either way it tolerates our wet spring.
HDPE resin wicker on an aluminum frame shrugs off moisture and UV. Natural rattan and untreated wicker will mildew and go brittle in a single Memphis summer.
The single biggest driver of how a set ages. Colour that goes all the way through the fibre resists fading and mildew; printed polyester surrenders to our sun fast.
