How does fountain maintenance change in the winter?

What You'll Learn In This Article

Why does maintenance change during the colder months?

Weather in the Mid-South is anything but predictable. One week the temperatures could be in the 80’s and the next in the 30’s. As the weather changes, so does a fountains’ needs. As the weather changes, leaves fall, and colder temperatures move in, your fountains’ needs change from week to week.

Here’s some of the ways that our maintenance members get the most out their fountain winter care.

  1. Cold Water Bacteria Applications. Many of the fountains that we maintain contain fish. That means there’s a living and breathing ecosystem in there! We switch our water treatments to include beneficial bacteria that thrive during the temperature swings and keep unsightly growth from appearing.
  2. Opening and Closing Fountains as needed. We do not typically shut down fountains on the first day of Fall. In fact, because we are regularly taking care of our customers’ fountains, we have the ability to open and close fountains to the customer’s desire. That means when temperatures are pleasant, we can keep the fountains running and looking beautiful. And when a freeze is about to hit the Mid-South, we will winterize the fountains, cover them, and then open them back up at our next service visit. This allows you to enjoy your fountain year-round.
  3. Winter Dosing System Maintenance. Automatic Dosing Systems are great for maintaining clean, clear fountains. But during the winter many fountains face freezing temperatures, flooding, and more. Our professional technicians know how to keep your dosing system protect and running when the unexpected happens.
  4. Larger Debris removal.  What happens if you leave your fountain running and leaves and debris fall in? No worries! We’ve got you covered. Included in our Aquacare Maintenance program is debris removal. This helps your pump run for longer and your feature looking beautiful.
  5. Fish, Lighting, and Pump Checks. Colder weather is hard on everything, including all the major components of your fountain. Our regular checks and maintenance ensures everything is running properly and ready for Spring!

FAQ’s

  1. Is it important to cover my fountain? We recommend covering the fountain when it freezes and during heavy leaf fall. Our fountain covers are sized to fit your fountain, not “one size fits all”. This ensures that major debris and water getting into the fountain are limited.
  2. How long will a commercial fountain cover last? A good fountain cover is key protecting your fountain. Our covers are designed to last several years. And if it does break, we will replace it for you.
  3. Why do I need a maintenance membership during the winter if my fountain is closed? We do not shut down fountains for the entire winter unless the customer wants it done. This means we are regularly on site to ensure everything is looking great and functioning well. And if it is covered, we will regularly check on the cover, remove and debris and water that has entered the fountain, and make sure it is level.
